Pain in the Neck - Part 2

The good news is that after our visit to JHU Pediatric Ortho, it is NOT a herniated disk. And better news, the pain is gone for now.We are 2 weeks out since our scary visit to the doctor and things are so much better.

Our visit to the JHU doctor didn't really give us any answers. But we did learn that it was not a herniated disk and we were relieved at that. There is some irregularity in the T1 & T2 area which is not uncommon to see in kids (it's called a Schmorl's node) however this condition does not usually present with pain like you have had.  Dr. Tis was a bit baffled by your posture and pain level for the conditions he could see on the MRI.  He was not sure what is going on.

He ordered a full panel of blood work (much to your dismay) and a repeat MRI in 12 days and a follow up visit with him in 2 weeks.  The bloodwork came back perfect, no infection anywhere. Phew.

Here's where we were today - MRI round 2.

Our wonderful radiation tech Mike did your MRI again per our request. He was awesome with you and you developed a rapport with him last time so I was so happy he was there for you today.  You had a much longer MRI session today (20 minutes without contrast & 20 minutes with contrast) and you were a rockstar.  You were a bit scared when they had to give you the IV needle for the contrast but after a few alligator tears and some loud music, you pulled through ok.  You are getting more and more brave as you go through these things.

So, we wait until Wednesday to go back to JHU and see what Dr. Tis has to say.  Being that your pain is gone (except for when you do a sit up), we are hopeful that he can see some differences in the MRI's and give us some answers on what could have been going on.  Fingers crossed for good news and some answers.  And for your sake, hoping you can get back to sports since soccer season starts Friday!

We ended the afternoon with two giant donuts of your choice - blueberry and double chocolate for dinner.  Well earned and well deserved!

UPDATE:
The Wednesday after this visit, we returned to see Dr. Tis at JHU. He said that he thinks that there wa a small fracture on the T1 vertebrae from the gymnastics incident 12+ weeks ago and the more recent pain was due to the bone fusing/healing itself. You are free of pain and he cleared you back for full sports activity.  When he said that, you let out a relieved scream and said emphatically "YES" with a fist pump.  Awesome news.  No more follow ups unless it flares up again.  We'll hope this was a one time deal and you're good to go.  Proud of you for being so brave buddy. It was pretty scary for a few weeks there.  More gray hairs for Mom & Dad....but so glad all is well again.
