22 Months and counting...

To my dearest boys,

This weekend was your 22 month birthday. How did we get here so quickly? It was just yesterday that you were just over 2 pounds and struggling to keep warm. Now you are almost 2 years old and I'm struggling to keep you contained!

Cole, the last few weeks you have turned into a different kid. Now that you can walk, you're so much more confident and happy. Not that you weren't happy before - but you definitely were so frustrated. I don't think I realized how much so until I'm seeing you now. You've got a whole new lease on life being able to get to where you want to go. You are starting to verbalize more and more each day - and boy, do you know what you want! When you don't get your way, we know about it. Some of your favorite things include hanging upside down, rough housing, playing peek a boo, chasing around in circles, ring around the rosie (especially the falling down part), throwing balls & climbing. Oh, and you love those balloons that you can bat around. You will try to climb anything and everything - and most of the time, you do it on your own. You can eat and eat and eat - but you don't gain an ounce! You're still very skinny but growing longer by the day. That belly of yours sticks out like an olive on a stick. You are such a love bug and still enjoy some cuddle time. I'm so thankful for that. On our recent vacation you didn't like the sand at all - in fact, you hate getting anything on your hands. But you really enjoyed swimming in the pool. There isn't a night that you go to bed without wimpering because the day is done. But most of the time, after a minute or so, you're down for the count. You wake up by 6:15 everyday, almost on the dot. And you wake up raring to go! You imitate your brother a lot - and try to say whatever he's saying. Monkey see, monkey do!
JD, you have blossomed so much in the last few weeks. Your vocabulary doubles on a daily basis. It's amazing! You will repeat ANY word, including the bad ones. It's so much fun to hear you talk every day - you have started to put short sentences together now. Your favorite things are the lawnmower (ma-mo-mo) and the wagon (wa-gm). Just this weekend you stood at the window watching Daddy cut the grass for at least 20 minutes. You were fascinated. You are running full speed now - and that arm of yours swings back and forth as you run. Most of the time you have a huge smile on your face and are just plain happy to be around. You've started to learn how to push my buttons - particularly when you take your play golf clubs and bonk Cole over the head. Repeatedly you do this while smiling and looking at me and after 2 times, I take the golf club for the day. For some reason, you do it again the next day and the same thing happens. You love to have snacks (nack) but you don't always eat your meals. Usually your brother is eating your leftovers. You are like your Daddy in that it takes you a few minutes to wake up in the mornings - you usually sleep almost til' 7am. And you're a bit grumpy for the first little while. You are a very concerned brother to Cole. Whenever he is not around, you search for him. And most times you will bring him a toy or drink or whatever it is that you have just so that he has one too. As of late, you have started calling him "Cole baby". You love to go to bed each day and you will even say night night when you're tired. You are still fascinated with brooms and anything else with a long handle; you call these items "mess". If we try to take one from you, it's not a pretty sight. You also love balls - and are learning the differences between basketballs, soccer balls and baseballs. You love ice, especially your "ice wawa".
Both of you are the light of my life. I miss you so much when I leave for work in the mornings and relish in the weekend time I have with you. You have turned into such little boys now - time just seems to be flying by much too quickly. It's amazing that you will be 2 in just a couple short months. How did we get so lucky? I love you both so very much and can't imagine my life without you.

Love,
Mommy

It appears we need a vacation from our vacation....

We're back. What a whirlwind. For the sake of not being a negative nelly about our week away, suffice to say that we had a good trip overall. But phew, Mommy & Daddy are recovering from a high stress time away. The house we rented was perfect - we had a great set up. And the weather was flawless. And the family we were with were awesome to be with - it was great to spend time with everyone. The cousins were awesome - and as I've said before, it's great to see the kids relished with so much love and affection.

Sadly, my kids didn't seem to feel that way most of the time. They were so out of sorts the whole trip that it was really hard to enjoy ourselves at times. I have held off posting anything because I really wasn't sure what to say about it. After we've been home a day or two, we now can see that the kids do not do well with adapting to change quickly. They fueled each others fires and often times if one was melting down, the other followed suit. It's probably a combo of their age (almost 2), lots of people and chaos, a new place, a new sleeping arrangement and LOTS of fresh air. They were exhausted and so were we. I think part of my stress was that I was disappointed as I really didn't consider that they might blow up without their normal routine. It caught me off guard for sure.

We did a lot of fun things though and I relished in their nap times to get a couple hours of peace and quiet. I had visions of reading and relaxing which wasn't quite the case - but that's just the way vacations are with little ones. We had a lot of extra help around which I appreciated so much (when the kids allowed me to leave the room without crying), and after about 5 days, the kids started to get adapted to things. Then it was time to leave. We all were quite happy to arrive home and sleep in our own beds. For the last 48 hours, the kids have been sleeping more than they have been awake - they're making up for lost sleep over the course of the week I guess.

Their first beach experience was a good one - although Cole isn't quite sure about sand. He fussed when he got sand on his hands but after a few times there, he learned to dust himself off and keep going. JD absolutely loves the sand, and the ocean. They both really loved the pool - it looks like our swimming lessons this winter were well worth it.

I've enjoyed the weekend being home (we got home about 1am on Saturday morning) to re-group and get ready for the grind again. I shudder to think what my departure tomorrow morning will be like - I have a feeling that our nanny is going to get a run for her money tomorrow and throughout the week. They will have to re-adjust to not having me around all day long.

I am sad that our vacation is over. We waited so long for it and it went so fast. Even despite the lack of sleep and sore arms & shoulders from carrying babies all week, I did enjoy spending time with our family who we don't get to see often; and it was nice getting out of the daily grind. We had fantastic weather, took some fun walks, had lots of laughs, spent a few moments with just our family of four, and saw some wild horses - and that made it all worthwhile.

Until next time...we're hoping this is just a phase with the kids and the next time will be a bit less stressful. We will return again - perhaps with a different mind set going into it! We're scheduled to depart this weekend with my side of the family, cousins and all, for a weekend in Deep Creek - consider yourselves forewarned family!

OBX, here we come....

We're off - summer vacation in the outer banks is just around the corner. I'm sure there will be lots of tales to tell so I'll try to keep updated throughout the week. Hopefully we'll have an internet connection where we are.

More soon.

HOT!

The weather. It was 101 on my car thermometer yesterday afternoon. Wow. It's only June. We're in for a hot one I guess.

Our yard pool made it's debut this weekend. Until JD's diaper exploded all over the pool and all of the gel from the inside of the diaper was floating on top of the water. Shame on me for not using a swim diaper right? I didn't realize this until I actually got in the pool with them to sit and play and felt these little invisible jelly things all over my legs. Have you ever seen the insides of a diaper? No wonder the crunchy people like to use cloth diapers - these things cannot be good for the environment!

Comparing Belly Buttons

Seriously Mom?

I'm stumped

The last week or so has me stumped. My kids have turned into little people that I can't seem to get my arms around - we've got some serious separation issues going on suddenly; and the jealousy is rearing it's ugly head a bit. Uh oh. I can't leave the house any time without one or both of them hysterically crying.

This parenting gig just hit a new level. It's interesting - the pressure I find that I've put on myself to handle these behaviors correctly without doing something detrimental to them down the line is incredible. I take parenting seriously but I had no idea how seriously I was taking it until I felt so helpless when things seemingly went out of my control as of late.

Both kids know how to push my buttons now - sure, it's the age. They've got my number. They know how to get my attention - both in a good and bad way. As with every other parent I know, forget getting on the phone with the kids around. They turn into crazy maniacs! I don't know why I even answer the phone when it rings and they are near - well, usually it's my husband calling, wondering what we're up to. 9 out of 10 times he calls, we're doing the same thing every afternoon. But he calls anyway just to be sure he's not missing anything good. Nonetheless, while on the phone for any length of time, if they aren't trying to finagle the phone from my ear to play with it, they are hanging on my pant leg or smacking each other (and me) over the head with golf clubs and other long sticked toys. Why is this?

I felt myself be at a loss for what to do the other day when it was time to leave the play ground and Cole looked at me and said adamantly "NO". And followed that with a short smack on my face with his hand. HUH? I don't hit my kids (at least not yet) so where on earth did he learn that? He screamed all the way to the car, and into the car seat, and part of the way home. I chalked it up to being hungry and tired. His behavior caught me so off guard, I didn't even discipline him. Shame on me. After they went to bed, I dragged out my "Toddler Wise" book and refreshed my memory on how to handle these issues. OK, now I was ready. Or so I thought.

These little creatures come up with some interesting antics. Just today, I answered a phone call after I got home and within 5 minutes of the conversation, JD was stealing whatever it was that Cole was playing with (while repeating incessantly the word "share", at least a thousand times in 10 seconds) and Cole bit him on the arm. Hard. This resulted in two screaming kids - both vying for my attention; which obviously was not on them since I was talking on the phone. Hmmmm. Their communication is still so limited and this is Cole's way of saying "bug off, it's mine". JD seems to think the word "share" means "here I come & if you don't give that to me right this second I'm taking it anyway". This never has a good end result.

Dinner rolled around and after about 5 bites, both plates ended up on the floor, upside down while both kids banged their forks on their trays screaming and laughing. All I could do was stand there with my mouth hanging open wondering, what do I do now? Shortly after this, JD demonstrated that he's learned how the water cooler faucet works, as he made a "mess" on the floor by letting out at least 2 cups of water on the hardwood floor. His obsession with messes has gotten worse - and he creates his own messes just so he can clean them up.

My quick thinking really needs to be perfected - I've got these delayed responses, which sometimes consist of cracking up laughing, which isn't going to do any of us much good in the discipline department. And forget it if C. is home and witnessing these behaviors with me - we look at each other and laugh. Not good. Bath time proceeded in much the same manner with water everywhere and both kids on their bellies in the tub kicking all of the water out. Aye.

Perhaps I need a class in Parenting 101...or maybe I just need to keep more wine in the frig and have happy hour a little earlier these days...it sure would make dinner time a bit more entertaining wouldn't it?

Happy Birthday Daddy!

We celebrated Daddy's Birthday today - it was a fun afternoon after our MOMs of Multiples picnic in the morning and hanging with Dad. Too bad it was so stinkin' hot!

Toddlerhood

Has arrived. WITH. A. VENGEANCE.

Yes, we've got full fledged toddlers here. With minds and wants of their own. Just this last week my sweet little boys (well, they are still sweet but...) turned into little people that are much harder to reason with. I knew it was coming and was surprised it hadn't come yet. Things just got a little louder around here.

The plastic golf clubs have been removed from the toy repertoire since they seemed to be better suited for whacking each other over the head than using them to hit golf balls. And the oven now has a special latch on it since we enjoy trying to climb inside. And all cabinets have been officially safety locked as to avoid the contents being strewn about the house. And I will add that all of these new safety features are extremely frustrating for two very busy little people since it took away all of the fun. The master bath is the latest point of interest - standing in the shower seems to be the place to be. Can someone tell me why a toddler enjoys chewing on an OUR adult toothbrushs so much?

The hardest part is not laughing at them when they start to push my buttons! What a hoot this is - it's amazing how manipulative they are at such a young age, isn't it? I feel like a broken record all day long refereeing the sharing and prompting please and thank you...

We had another fun weekend and I took a lot of photos and video. Enjoy.

JD is absolutely infatuated with the "HOSE"

The red car is still a hot commodity - it dawned on us this weekend what it will be like trying to share the car at 16...

Only 10 more years and he'll be able to relieve Daddy of lawn duty!

After a long morning outdoors playing - we're thirsty!
